Our History

1965 - Opening

The Bethesda Evetide Homes were founded by Bethesda Baptist Church in 1965 to provide sheltered accomodations for retired Christian people on a self-catering basis.

1985 - Branching out

In 1983 the Homes were extended to provide 4 additional self-catering rooms and a flat for a warden.  A part time warden was appointed.  Later one of the rooms was coverted into a dining room and midday meals were provided for residents and visitors.

1990 - Enhancing service

In 1990 the Committee felt led to raise the level of care provided by the Homes and the building was redeveloped and extended to provide for up to 22 residents receiving residential care.  Residents homes and communal areas were upgraded at the same time.  A full time Manager and full complement of care and support staff were appointed.

2010 - New Development

In 2010 work was completed on an exciting new develpoment project which included the addition of 5 new resident homes.  The lounge and dining room were extended and refurbished and an additional smaller lounge added.  the homes services were also extended to be able to provide care for residents living with the early stages of dementia.

Steve Barber

Home Manager

Joined 2015

Hello, I’m Steve. I have worked in care since 1995, and in management roles since 1998, qualifying as a Registered Care Manager in 2005.

Having spent several months as an agency worker, I have seen a lot that is good about care services and some that is not so good. I am therefore passionate about providing high quality care and a personalised service to support residents.

My aim is for residents to remain as independent as possible, expressing their needs and exercising choices. I strive to work with families and other professionals, as a team, enabling residents  to enjoy fulfilled  lives.

Karen Bannister

Business Manager

Joined 2017

Hello, I am Karen and I joined Bethesda Eventide Homes in 2017 as Business Manager.

I have more than 30 years’ experience in business; both running my own companies and those belonging to others. I have worked for both large organisations and independent businesses and I am experienced in Finance, HR, Facilities, Compliance and all types of administration. My role here is to manage all of these administrative and financial functions and put plans in place to safeguard Bethesda’s future – allowing the Homes Manager to effectively manage and oversee the continued improvement of the already lovely Bethesda Eventide Homes and the care of the residents.

In the time that I have been here I have been extremely impressed with the level of care and respect given to the residents by all involved with their care and I am very pleased to be able to assist and be part of Bethesda’s future.

Yvonne Waters

Activities Co-ordinator

Joined 2004

Hi, I’m Yvonne. I’ve worked in caring for older people for 16 years, 12 of them at Bethesda Eventide Homes.

I have been in my present role for 4 years. As co-ordinator, I realise that all staff are involved in activities through their daily routines and conversations with residents.

I really enjoy time spent with residents, both in activities and conversation, and my planning is person centred. I know that 1:1 time with residents is important, and I like to take time discussing their individual histories and interests as well as organising group activities.

Tom Horrex

Deputy Home Manager

Joined 2020

Hello I’m Tom, I joined Bethesda Eventide Homes as Deputy Manager in May 2020, although you may recognise me from my time here previously as a Senior Team Leader.

I have worked within care for over 10 years, beginning as a kitchen assistant and most recently as registered manager of a residential home specialising in dementia care.

I fell in love with care after regularly visiting great grandparents in residential care settings. The love and care that they were shown during their later years are what inspired me to commence work within the sector.

I find daily satisfaction in helping others to receive appropriate levels of support whilst maintaining their independence. The last chapter of a book is usually the best, and I feel it is a great privilegeto be able to help others to live a fulfilled life and be part of their later years whilst supporting the Management here to further develop the already excellent care provided at the home.
